food tour | avignon

I met Aurelie for the Avignon Gourmet Tour and she started out getting to know each of us and to start our day right – with a croissant. She is quite lovely as well as charming and clearly loves what she does. We toured for about 4.5 hours and she introduced us to all of her favorites food shops as well as local treats with lots of information on some of the local food traditions  

You simply must come to Avignon and go on her food tours. I won’t share her places so you can discover them on her tours.

Our first stop – a local maker that specializes in chocolate ganache and bars. Aurelie gave us samples and shared with us the flavors of the chocolate.

Our second stop was a local baker who specializes in natural sourdoughs and uses all organic flours. We didn’t have any samples here, but I went back and bought some bread – delicious! Aurelie gave everyone a map so you can find the shops again.

Third stop: A family owned specialty coffee roaster where we enjoyed some coffee and a sample of a traditional Provence “boat” cookie. Lovely cookies made with the residual essence of orange blossoms.

This coffee roaster roasts his own beans every afternoon with a machine in the front of the store so the smell is intoxicating.

This apparently changes every year when the shopkeepers get together to decide what to hang along this one stretch.

A quick non-food stop at St Pierre while we took a break.

Fourth stop: A wine tasting at a shop that sells both domestic and international wines along with glassware and wine accessories. Aurelie shared some interesting details about our wine and the local region of wine-making.

And our last stop: Aurelie took us to Les Halles d’ Avignon where she gathered a lovely lunch of tapas from all the best purveyors. The market is delightful and sells everything from ready made food to wine.
